The Complete History of Indianapolis 500 Winners

1972: Mark Donohue

Starting Position: 3
Race Time: 3:04:05.540
Chassis/engine: McLaren/Offy
Two major traditions started at Indianapolis in 1972. Jim Nabors took over the reigns in singing “Back Home Again in Indiana” and Roger Penske got his first of 15 Indianapolis 500 victories to date. Gary Bettenhausen was strong in Penske's #7 McLaren all race but he overheated with 28 laps remaining. Donohue was able to capitalize in the other #66 Penske car for the biggest win of his short but brilliant career. He would be killed in a practice crash for a Formula 1 race in Austria in 1975.
