The Complete History of Indianapolis 500 Winners

1969: Mario Andretti

Starting Position: 2
Race Time: 3:11:14.710
Chassis/engine: Hawk/Ford
The month of May did not start well for Mario when he suffered minor facial burns after crashing his primary car. Lucky for Andretti, the backup was just as quick. He qualified in the second spot and got his twin brother Aldo to stand in for him in the front row photograph. Mario didn't need any stunt doubles on race day, as he cruised to the win in the Hawk prepared by Andy Granatelli. The Italian-born naturalized American citizen had won the Daytona 500 two years prior, but this victory combined with a Formula 1 world title in 1978 made the name Andretti into global racing royalty.
