After a four-year WWII hiatus the Indy 500 was back, and a new tradition was started. This race featured the first pre-race rendition of “Back Home Again in Indiana” sung by James Melton. Jim Nabors has performed the tune since 1972. On the track Canadian driver George Robson dominated, leading 138 laps en route to the win.
