New Report Suggests Car CD Players Are on the Way Out

In a world where people carry around hundred of thousands of songs literally in the palm of their hand, there has been one safe zone for the Compact Disc: Your car. Similar to what happened to cassette players, automakers have now indicated that they will likely start phasing CD players out of their new vehicles.

With smartphones, "clouds," and satellite radio, high quality music is readily available in so many other ways that the expensive optical drives are no longer necessary. Newer models will feature small streamlined computers in your dash that can draw music from a variety of devices using different wireless networks. Considering digital downloads surpassed physical sales for the first time in 2011, we can't imagine this will face too much opposition from younger generations.
