For some reason, when people speak of great sports cars, American models get left out in the cold. We don't know why. It's not like we haven't built great, award-winning, championship machines. Does no one remember Ford's GT40? And if you can't think that far back, how about the Corvettes that dominate almost every Le Mans competition in which they participate? There's also the 'Vette that was able to go faster than 250 mph decades before Bugatti attempted to do it. The list goes on.

With the 2012 model year sporting a bunch of American performance cars that can go toe-to-toe with their foreign competition, it looks like the tradition will continue. Allow us to jog your memory a bit: From limited-edition Corvettes to Warner Brothers-inspired Plymouths to Viper-powered pickups, we count down the 50 Greatest American Sports Cars of All Time.

I would expect nothing less than a Viper being at the top of the list!

Whoever made this list is clearly not an American. If they were they would know that the Ford Mustang is one of the most iconic and legendary American VEHICLES in the history of this great nation. I mean really? They put the Ford Lightning in front of the Ford Mustang? First of all, the ford lightning is a truck, that is a fact, and in no way can be called a "sports car". Secondly, the Ford Mustang, even the shitty ones from the 80's and 90's could smoke that piece of shit on any given day. I rest my case, but this list is a load of crap.

what are the probe, stealth and talon/laser doing on this list? they are just re-skinned copies of their japanese counterparts...and to say the stealth 'borrowed' from the 3000gt is rubish. it IS a 3000gt...the probe is merely a mazda mx-6...and where is the omni glhs?

Seriously? The Neon SRT ahead of 2 of the single most iconic cars of America, the 63 and 69 Corvettes? And the GNX ahead of the Mosler MT900, Cobra R, all Corvettes and Mustangs, and Sledgehammer only 13th? should be atleast top 10 since it was for many years the fastest street legal car at 254 mph... A rebodied Mitsubishi garbage shouldnt even be on the list let alone 8th. And a Foxbody in 6th? Who made this list, a 13 year old with limited knowlege to the heritage of American Sports cars? a good portion of these are re badged jap cars, or garbage to begin with. i stronglydisagree with almost this entire list.

let me premice my comments by saying the list is supposed to be the 50 greatest american sports cars - thereby technically speaking muscle cars, luxury cars, trucks, and anything with 4 doors must all thereby be excluded wtf is a dodge ram doing on the list? it's a truck wtf is the superbird doing outside of first place? - it's technically not allowed to be on the list but it's sheer awesomeness allow it to rule the list but wtf is it doing in 27th place? wtf is a ford lightning doing on the list? it's a truck wtf is a ford taurus SHO doing on the list? 4 doors wtf is a dodge neon doing on the list? 4 doors, hideous, terrible engines, it's a dodge and not a v8 wtf is a gmc cyclone doing on the list? it's a truck wtf is a gmc typhoon doing on the list? it's a truck wtf are any cadilacs doing on the list? they're luxury cars wtf is a impala ss doing on the list? i think number 3 the shelby cobra should be in the second place (only to the superbird even though it's not legal for the list) i don't understand why there are so many listings of the mustang, camaro or corvette

How do you get to write this stuff when you don't know what a sports car is, and apparently don't know what "American" means?
