Ever since the Sugar Hill Gang name-dropped the Lincoln Continental in "Rapper’s Delight", the automobile has played a major role in the hip-hop culture. On the West coast, a burgeoning lowrider scene sparked a new found passion for American car manufacturers such as Cadillac, Chevy, and Oldsmobile, while rap crews from the same area rapped about customizing these cars for show-and-tell. Their East coast counterparts opted for the more luxurious foreign vehicles such as BMW, Lexus, and Benz after taking notes from the larger-than-life mafioso drug dealer characters often sprinkled in their rhymes.
As time moved on, these vehicles, much like hip-hop itself, grew even more extravagant and excessive—reaching record-breaking speeds and price tags bigger than most homes. From the coast to coast, from the south to the mid-west, spanning 30-plus years, we cover the top 25 cars that have had an impact on hip-hop music and vice versa.

Golden Child August 7th, 2011 at 04:10 PM
I agree, anything by Acura was iconic in the mid 90's, especially on the East Coast. "I used to drive an Ac' and kept a Mack in the engine..." -Prodigy of Mobb Deep circa 1995 "Send shots through your Ac' Vigor..." - Prodigy circa 1996 "Drinking malt liquor driving a broke Vigor..." -Jadakiss circa 1997 "Ac' Legend with the dice wearing leopard..." - Styles P circa 1996 "Mashing in a stolen jacked Ac' Integra..." - Outlaws circa 1996 "Now my Moms pimps an Ac' with minks on her back..." - Biggie circa 1994 "With the mack in the Ac', door panelling" - Biggie circa 1994 There are countless more Acura references in Hip Hop

LOL at this article, there are so many mistakes in here from the wrong era model pictures shown for most of the cars lyrical references, to the wrong people credited for lyrics, to just flat out technical misinformation about the cars themselves, good job

@DAVE yeah bro tell me about it. The one with the 7 series how are you gonna quote Baby when that was Malice who said it. and "bimmer?" come one you know it's BEAMER. how could such a reputable and established magazine make such petty mistakes. smdh
JAY August 6th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Beamer is actually the term for a BMW Motorcycle. Bimmer is the proper "slang" term for a BMW car. Look it up.
Carlos August 7th, 2011 at 02:07 AM
@pidio a beamer is a BMW motorcycle, a bimmer is a car. http://www.bimmercenter.com/article_001_name.html

Missed the South COMPLETELY. Watch videos from MIA, ATL, etc from the last decade and you'll see what I'm talking about. For example, no 71-76 Impala/Caprice?

Ok, can't believe that I'm the first to mention this, but the car pictured is a SAAB 9000, not the 900 turbo. Big difference.
