Big Mac: Meet the New McLaren MP4-12C

Yesterday, McLaren Automotive—the consumer wing of the performance and race car building McLaren Group—officially unveiled their long awaited successor the McLaren F1, the MP4-12C. For those who don't know, the F1 was McLaren's three seat, $1.5 million, super car that held the title for world's fastest production car until a generation of hyper cars like the Bugatti Veyron came out to dethrone it. So you see what a big deal it is for McLaren to release another car. It's like Jordan coming back to the league. It's a pretty big deal. And so far, judging from the specs and details given at its unveiling, it seems to be able to live up to all the hype and expectations. There's no doubt you're going to be hearing a lot about the MP4-12C in the future—we're sure Weezy's gonna cop one as soon as he gets out. So we put together everything you need to know about McLaren's new 200+ mph, $230,000 super car below.

DESIGN:
• McLaren utilized their extensive Formula 1 knowledge to make the MP4-12C as performance oriented as possible with its design. They didn't take an extraordinary leap in styling, everything is purposeful. The design is a continuation and modernization of their F1 model. And just like with their F1 model, carbon is used throughout the car. To keep weight down, McLaren designed the chassis (the body) as a carbon fiber tub like in Formula 1 racers using a process that reportedly can keep the costs significantly lower than before. The result is a weight of about 2,866 lbs.

PERFORMANCE:
• Nestled behind the driver you'll find a 3.8 liter V8 made by McLaren themselves. For the F1 they called on BMW to supply them with a motor. Not this time. This time around, they built a beast of a powerplant, able to put out 600 horses and 442 lb-ft of torque. Most of it available very early in the powerband, meaning as soon as you put your foot down. They didn't give a 0-60mph time, but they did give us a 0-125 mph time of under 10 seconds, which if you were unaware is strikingly fast. It can then go on to get back down to 0 mph in 5 seconds, before going off again to hit its top speed of over 200 mph.

INTERIOR:
• Another improvement over the F1 is the interior—it's not the barebones, goal oriented awkward three seat arrangement. This time there are materials that are nice to the touch, and it's easy to get in and out of.
