An honest documentary about the collision of love and art, Cutie and the Boxer profiles the strained 40-year marriage between painter Ushio Shinohara, now famous for his ‘boxing’ paintings, and his wife, Noriko, an artist herself. The film explores Noriko’s own artistic struggles through her drawing series entitled “Cutie and the Bullie” as well as her efforts to be more than Shinohara’s wife and sometimes assistant. Love is messy, and if there’s anything that this film shows us, it’s that life imitates art.
