Netflix has shared the teaser trailer for Adam McKay’s upcoming ensemble comedy Don’t Look Up.
Due out in theaters Dec. 10 and on the streaming giant Dec. 24, the film features a star-studded cast that reunites The Wolf of Wall Street co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill, sees Kid Cudi, Ariana Grande snuggling up, Jennifer Lawrence, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Tyler Perry, Cate Blanchett, Rob Morgan, Mark Rylance, and Rob Perlman.
Written and directed by McKay—whose celebrated work includes Anchorman, Step Brothers, and The Big Short—the dark comedy stars DiCaprio and Lawrence as two low-level astronomers who set out on a journey to warn civilization about a giant asteroid that’s on a collision course with the Earth. Meanwhile, Streep plays U.S. President Janie Orlean (who’s been described as Trumpian) with Jonah Hill portraying her son and chief-of-staff.
During a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, McKay explained how he was able to land the film’s leading stars.
“I’ve known Jennifer [Lawrence] for a good while now,” the 53-year-old writer-director said. “I’ve been a giant fan [of hers] since she first came on the scene and she just straight up makes me laugh. So I wrote this role for her. She was the first actor in.”
“Leo was interested and then the pandemic hit,” McKay added. “So we used lot of the time during the pandemic to just go through the script, talk about his character. He’s really smart, he really knows movies, he knows movie history, he understands characters, and it was very enjoyable.”
Meanwhile, DiCaprio told EW he was sold on his role after reading McKay’s “incredibly unique” script.
“Adam has an unparalleled ability to spark conversation with humor and timely stories,” DiCaprio said. “I knew when I read his script that it was incredibly unique, as it struck an important chord concerning the modern world we live in. Adam has woven an incredibly timely message about society, how we communicate, our current priorities, and the climate crisis into an absurdly funny yet important movie.”
