Maisie Williams says she was “surprised” by her Game of Thrones character Arya sleeping with Gendry in the HBO show’s eighth and final season.

Speaking withTeen Vogue this week for an interview focused on various “firsts,” Williams revealed the moment in question actually marked the “first time” she was surprised by her character, after years in the role.

“The first time that I was surprised by Arya, I guess, was probably in the final series where she whips off her clothes and sleeps with Gendry,” Williams, who previously opened up to British GQ about how her feelings toward Arya changed over time, said early into the video above. “I thought that Arya was queer, you know?”

The celebrated Game of Thrones character was often a source of impassioned fan commentary during the blockbuster series’ eight-season run, with the Gendry-focused scene during its final season proving to be a surprise for viewers and actors alike.

Williams is currently on the promo circuit in support of Pistol, a recently launched FX on Hulu series focused on the rise of massively influential English punk band Sex Pistols. In the Danny Boyle-directed miniseries, Williams plays Pamela Rooke, a.k.a. Jordan.

As for the televised future of Game of Thrones, fans will soon be able to see the new prequel series House of the Dragon. As announced earlier this year, the series—set 200 years prior to the events of the main Thrones series—will debut on Aug. 21 via HBO.
