Director: Shane Carruth
The 2004 sci-fi flick from writer/director/producer Shane Carruth was made for a shockingly low $7,000. Proving that movies need not be expensive-ass blockbusters to find love, Primer is highly regarded for its complex plot and heady technical dialogue, which the director, a former engineer, refused to simplify for audiences.
The film follows two engineers (Carruth and Sullivan) who are experimenting with time travel. At first, they use this to play with stock markets, but the pair soon become more ambitious and adventurous with their new toy. To prevent the dangers of time travel that they quickly discover, the engineers must go back in time to convince themselves not to indulge in their invention. —Tara Aquino
