The 1999 James Van Der Beek-starring football drama Varsity Blues is getting a TV series reboot at mobile-oriented streaming service Quibi. As Entertainment Weekly reports, Stuber writer Tripper Clancy is developing the script, while Dumplin' and 27 Dresses helmer Anne Fletcher will direct.
"For all those who cheered Mox’s refrain, ‘I don’t want your life,’ as well as all those who never heard of the West Canaan Coyotes, we’re thrilled to bring Varsity Blues to Quibi and into the 21st century," executive producer Mike Tollin said of the reboot in a statement. Tollin served as a producer on the film.
Back in 2016, CMT and Paramount TV announced their plans to bring the movie to the small screen, although assumedly that version quietly got canceled at some point down the line. There's no casting details for the "modern take" on Varsity Blues yet and there's not a production date either, but the show will join an ever-increasing slate of content at Quibi.
It was announced last month that Quibi will launch April 6, 2020, and will arrive with two subscription tiers. For users who want no commercials, the service will cost $7.99 a month, while the version with "short ads" will cost $4.99. The service is designed for mobile devices exclusively, with shortform content specifically tailored for the platform. Guillermo del Toro and Sam Raimi are currently producing horror shows for Quibi, while Chrissy Teigen will front a court show a la Judge Judy.
