Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth are reuniting on the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Thompson is joining her Thor: Ragnarok costar Chris Hemsworth for the forthcoming Men in Black reboot.
News broke last month that Hemsworth was in early talks with Sony producers to take the role of Agent K, originally played by Tommy Lee Jones. Thompson, who plays Valkyrie in the latest Thor film, would then be starring as Agent J, who was played by Will Smith in the 1997 original and its two sequels.
Straight Outta Compton and The Fate of the Furious director F. Gary Gray is going to helm the remake, which is being penned by Iron Man screenwriters Matt Holloway and Art Marcum. The new movie will stick to the same premise of the originals: the story of a secret task force with the duty of policing a hidden alien population. The film is currently slated for a June 14, 2019 release.
Sources told THR that the new project “is more of an ensemble piece than a two-hander and will be more global in scope,” meaning Agent K and Agent J might not be the only stars or the reboot. It may be hard to imagine Hemsworth as a suited agent that battles intergalactic scum—or one who comically wipes people’s memory with a neuralyzer—but adding Thompson to the mix is an exciting move for a film that certainly has big shoes to fill.
Thompson recently starred alongside Natalie Portman in Annihilation, and made an appearance in Janelle Monae’s new video for “Make Me Feel.” She's also in Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You.
