President Donald Trump has made plenty of headlines for some outrageous statements on the campaign trail. Here’s a few off top:
“Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.”
"I will build a great wall -- and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me --and I'll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words."
"Donald J. Trump is calling for a "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on."
But have you ever wondered how these quotes are translated to people in other countries? Well, Trevor Noah decided to shed some light on the process on a recent episode of The Daily Show.
Trump is facing some controversy yet again for some comments made to France’s First Lady Brigitte Macron. In regards to her figure, he said, “She's in such good physical shape.” It wasn’t a harmless compliment because he said it in front of Melania Trump, leaving us to believe he was hitting on Emmanuel Macron’s wife.
After Noah poked fun at the incident, he explains to viewers that maybe some of his words get lost in translation. In a segment titled “The Translators,” corespondent Desi Lydic sat down with translators from around the world to get their take on the challenges of interpreting Trump to their respective audiences.
Lydic addresses some of the obstacles they have faced in the past: his incoherence, his grammatically incorrect speeches, and his uneducated messages. A Syrian translator, for example, flat-out admits he’s accurate 97 percent of the time, but lies 3 percent. “3 percent you have to fake it to make sense. Otherwise you’re going to look like an idiot yourself,” he says.
After interviewing them, Lydic makes them go through some rigorous training to capture his body language and mannerisms. She argues these translators must accurately interpret Trump to citizens, which ends up being a pretty funny (and vulgar) conclusion. You can check it out above.
