When it was announced that the Star Wars spin-off Rogue One was going to be set during the original trilogy, everyone got excited about the possibility of classic characters popping up in it. And imagine how cool it would have been if on opening night, with a crowd of super-excited nerds, there was a cameo that you totally didn’t know was coming?

But instead, Entertainment Weekly have confirmed that Darth Vader is going to be Rogue One. Because that’s how film marketing works in 2016. It makes sense — the spin-off is reportedly a height movie about a group of X-Wing pilots, including Felicity Jones, stealing the plans to the Death Star, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that he makes an appearance. EW says that Vader will be the actual big bad behind the main villain Director Krenni (played by Ben Mendelsohn):

Darth Vader kind of looms large over the plot even when he’s not necessarily on screen because the new villain played by Ben Mendelsohn, Director Krennic ... He’s trying to fulfill the wishes of the emperor and he’s got kinda Vader looming in the background over his shoulder, making sure that he gets the job done.

No word on if James Earl Jones will be back to voice him, but we hope so — it wouldn’t be the same without Vader having the same voice as Mufasa from The Lion King.
