We're only two months away from the moment when the third installment of the rebooted Star Trek film series hits theaters, and to help fuel the anticipation, Paramount Pictures has dropped an entirely new trailer. The 2-minute clip finds Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and the rest of the crew of the Starship Enterprise battling back against possibly their most dangerous foe yet. The Enterprise is shown being ripped to shreds in an attack and some of the crew, including Uhura have been taken hostage by the new alien bad guy Krall played by Idris Elba. Harrowing stuff!

This new Star Trek film is the first in the series to be directed by someone other than J.J. Abrams. Justin Lin, most notable for helming multiple installments of the Fast & Furious franchise, was tapped last year to take over what Abrams had started. During a roundtable a few months back, Lin outlined his philosophy in handling the next film in the Star Trek canon. "The one thing I wanted to make sure is that it hopefully represents that we are trying to be bold and take risks, whether we are successful or not, I don’t know," he said. "The inside baseball version of the creation of this Trek was pretty condensed in how you usually make a movie of this size. And I wanted us to be bold, I wanted us to take chances."

The new trailer was premiered last night at a fan event hosted by Adam Savage of Mythbusters. Star Trek Beyond is set to debut in the theaters July 22.
