Comic book universes having earth-shattering, “This changes everything!” events are nothing new. Since DC originally tore apart, and then rebuilt, their entire timeline in 1985’s Crisis on Infinite Earths, these big events have been a semi-regular occurrence, usually used to both tidy up continuity and offer a jumping on point for new readers. Every time this happens, they claim it’s the biggest deal ever, but fans are jaded now, and to be honest, the more things change, the more things stay the same. However, the latest relaunch, DC: Rebirth #1, is actually the most radical they’ve done in a long while. But not in the ways you’d expect.
