The Final 'Wolverine' Movie Is Shooting for an R-Rating

'Wolverine 3' is going to amp things up with an R-rating.

Betty White's best picture of the yearDeadpool has changed the game of future superhero releases following the unprecedented box office success of Marvel's "Merc With a Mouth." Deadpool broke box office records during a typically sleepy month for movie releases to achieve the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated movie ever. Our own Deadpool aficionado predicted what Deadpool's box office record could mean for upcoming superhero movies like the highly-anticipated Suicide Squad, as did Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. They have both been proven right as Wolverine 3 is reportedly planned to be rated R.

In a long Facebook post Gunn lamented how studios would inevitably try to copy Deadpool in an attempt to land the same success: "So, over the next few months, if you pay attention to the trades, you'll see Hollywood misunderstanding the lesson they should be learning with Deadpool. They'll be green lighting films "like Deadpool"—but, by that, they won't mean "good and original" but "a raunchy superhero film" or "it breaks the fourth wall." They'll treat you like you're stupid, which is the one thing Deadpool didn't do." And it seems, at least on the surface, that's what 20th Century Fox has done for Wolverine 3. But maybe the studio had been planning to shake things up prior to Deadpool's release and now feels confident about its plans after seeing its success. Comicbook Resources reports the studio announced its R-rating plans for Wolverine 3 at its Toy Fair presentation.

The upcoming Wolverine film will see Hugh Jackman reprising his Wolverine role for the final time. Wolverine 3 is set to premiere March 3, 2017 and in case you were wondering Hugh Jackman thinks Wolverine can "100 percent" take on Deadpool.
