Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to break box office records almost two months after its release. The epic Disney movie may eclipse the $2 billion global box office mark by the end of the week, according to Variety.

This weekend, Star Wars: The Force Awakens added $10.8 million to its domestic box office. The movie grossed more than $895 million, which surpassed Avatar's box office records. Additionally, the popular film accrued an additional $12.6 million internationally, which brings its grand total to $1.09 billion. Another solid weekend will place Star Wars: The Force Awakens in an elite class of films that have made more than $2 billion globally.

Those other movies are Avatar and Titanic

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak, told Variety that reaching the $2 billion benchmark signals the importance of the Star Wars franchise.

"The box office performance of Star Wars: The Force Awakens shows just how much Star Wars is part of the DNA of moviegoers in North America," he explained. "It shows how important legacy can be for a movie because there's been an incredible enthusiasm for this one."
