Red Carpet Photographer to Kumail Nanjiani: 'Smile, You're in America Now'

Kumail Nanjiani says the worst part of hosting the Independent Spirit Awards with Kate McKinnon was his encounter with a racist photographer.

By any measure, Saturday night's Independent Spirit Awards were so much more diverse than #OscarsSoWhite. Three out of four of the acting awards went to people of color (Idris Elba and Abraham Atta for for Beasts of No Nation, and Mya Taylor for Tangerine), and the ceremony was hosted by a woman, Kate McKinnon, and a Pakistani American, Kumail Nanjiani.

Unfortunately, the night didn't start out so great for Nanjiani, as the comedian explained via Twitter the following morning.

We're sorry to hear that Nanjiani had to deal with that, but let's just take a moment to celebrate the fact that this dude has been killing it for the past few years between podcasting, stand-up, and numerous TV roles.

Like on his great stand-up special Beta Male...

And this guest spot on Portlandia, which might be the funniest thing ever on Portlandia...

And his role on HBO's Silicon Valley...

And, yes, last night's Independent Spirit Awards, because at least one person who was there for work was a professional...

Keep it moving, Kumail.
