Welcome to 2009, Australia

Remember 2009? It was the year Beyonce blessed all the single ladies with Put A Ring On It, when Drake dropped So Far Gone, and Yasiin Bey was going by the name Mos Def.

It was also the year Virgin America announced on-board wi-fi for domestic flights. It was seven damn years ago. Aussie airline Qantas are finally getting on top of this internet thing, with in-flight wi-fi set to be a standard on their domestic fleet of A330s and B737s. The catch? Well, it won't be ready until 2017.

The Age published the following comment from Qantas CEO Alan Joyce:
"Bringing high-speed wi-fi to the domestic aviation market has been an ambition of ours for a long time and we now have access to the right technology to make it happen."

"The sheer size of the Australian landmass creates some significant challenges for inflight connectivity but the recent launch of NBN's satellite has opened up new opportunities that we plan to take advantage of with ViaSat's help."

"This service will give Qantas customers download speeds in the air similar to what they're used to on the ground... you won't be limited to checking your email or Facebook,"

The announcement of in-flight wi-fi is sure to be welcomed by basically anyone who has ever flown anywhere, but Qantas are still yet to confirm if the fare price will increase to cover the cost of the connection.
