These days it's the American Lung Association giving Leonardo DiCaprio crap about what he's inhaling, but 23 years ago it was one of the most famous actors in the world.

Back when they were filming the 1993 film What's Eating Gilbert Grape? together, Johnny Depp says he "tortured" Yung Leo, who was then 19, hazing him on the set in various ways.

Depp shared the story earlier this week while speaking at the Santa Barbara Film Festival where he was given a lifetime achievement award, Zap2it reports.

“I tortured him. ... I really did. ... [I’d say]: ‘No, I will not give you a drag of my cigarette while you hide from your mother again, Leo’.”

The site also shared a video (above) of Depp seeming to dare DiCaprio to eat a prop pickled sausage (2:40) that had probably been floating in brine for decades in some warehouse.

Leo has since switched to e-cigs, at least during televised awards ceremonies, though we'll see what he's puffing on when the Oscars return to ABC on Feb. 28.
