All easily crafted jokes aside, the current state of American politics is a pretty scary reality that many are presumably just numbing via their respective vices. Not a bad idea at all. However, though our collective depression may not can handle the added weight, what if the problem is bigger than just a very serious presidential candidate whose fervent supporters also believe in things like the continuation of white supremacy and the assault of fellow Americans?
Of course, there's a movie about this rise of idiocracy and it's so conveniently named Idiocracy:
Though clearly not a documentary, as proven by the presence of Luke Wilson and Terry Crews, Idiocracy has remained an oft-repeated reference point for anyone practically blown away by the current state of things. If you've somehow avoided conversations that end in the proclamation "It's like Idiocracy, dude!" then you are a greater master of social avoidance than I am.
Etan Cohen, who co-wrote Idiocracy with King of the Hill mastermind Mike Judge, finally weighed in on that comparison on Wednesday. "I never expected Idiocracy to become a documentary," Cohen tweeted. "I thought the worst thing that would come true was everyone wearing Crocs."
Not everyone is wearing Crocs, but plenty of people are dumping plenty of time money into the ideologies of anti-intellectualism that permeate the dystopian habitat of Idiocracy. Thankfully, our brothers and sisters in Canada are welcoming us with open arms to a seemingly beautiful island for intellectual refuge.
