Later today we will finally get a better sense of what the Academy thinks are the best films and performances of 2015. But before that happens, the Golden Raspberry Awards have given out their awards for the worst of the year. To no one's surprise, Fifty Shades of Grey was skewered by the Razzies, an organization that basically spoofs the Oscars and hands out awards to trash films.
Fifty Shades of Grey tied for worst film of the year along with the Fantastic Four reboot. Although boasting an amazing cast (Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell), the Fantastic Four film was not only a copy of the ridiculous franchise that came before it, but a worse movie all together. Still, despite only having a 9 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, the superhero flick didn't receive as many Razzies as Fifty Shades of Grey, the first of three films adapting the popular erotic novels by E.L. James.
In addition to winning a Worst Picture award, Fifty Shades of Grey also took Razzies for Worst Actor (Jamie Dornan), Worst Actress (Dakota Johnson), Worst Screen Combo, and Worst Screenplay. Director Sam Taylor-Johnson was nominated for Worst Director but was spared the dishonor (it went to Four's director Josh Trank).
Outside of the two movies, Eddie Redmayne won Worst Supporting Actor for his role in Jupiter's Ascending, which was released the same year as his Oscar-winning role in Theory of Everything. Kaley Cuoco won for Worst Supporting Actress for her mediocre performances in The Wedding Ringer and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Trip.
On a happier note, Sylvester Stallone, a frequent Razzie contender, won the Redeemer Award for his work on Creed. Stallone is the front runner for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars tonight. Also, "Earned It," a song by the Weeknd that appears in Fifty Shades, is up for an Academy Award for Best Original Song tonight. At least the team behind the film can get behind that.
