Twitter Warns Users They May Have Been Hacked in a "State-Sponsored" Attack

More than 20 people have received the warning.

An estimated 37 Twitter users have reportedly received a notice warning them of a possible "state-sponsored" hack, according to the Daily Dot. "As a precaution, we are alerting you that your Twitter account is one of a small group of accounts that may have been targeted by state-sponsored actors," the warning reads. "We believe that these actors (possibly associated with a government) may have been trying to obtain information such as email addresses, IP addresses, and/or phone numbers."

Twitter, who did not identify the purported state-sponsored attacker or provide specifics on the intentions of the possible attack, doesn’t have a policy similar to that of Facebook or Google regarding the act of informing users of state-sponsored hackers. In fact, the Dot reports, this is the "first known instance" of Twitter sending a notice of this kind.

Among those who have received the notice, according to the Guardian, are an encryption activist and a security researcher. In fact, several of the potentially impacted users appear to be involved with the growing Internet privacy community. A Twitter spokesperson confirmed the authenticity of the warning emails to CNET on Monday, but declined to provide any additional details.
