After rumours that Vin Diesel himself could be taking the director’s chair on Furious 8, it seems that Universal have seen sense and decided to go with someone who actually has experience at making films. And the name that’s leading the pack seems to be a very on-point choice.

According to Variety, Straight Outta Compton director F Gary Gray is favourite to take the job. The Fast & Furious movies have always had a hip-hop influence, and as well as killing it on the N.W.A. film, Gray has been making rap videos since Ice Cube’s ‘Today Was A Good Day’. He’s also made some solid action movies like The Italian Job and The Negotiator, and of course he gets a lifetime pass for making Friday.

Other names on the list apparently include Adam WIngard (The Guest), which would be good, and Louis Leterrier (Hulk), which would be less good.
