A policeman in Far North Queensland has copped some unwanted attention after being caught apparently having a nap at the wheel of his vehicle. The photo above was taken after he appeared to have a quick cop-kip beside Mareeba’s busy Anzac Ave on Wednesday afternoon.

A woman from the area, Kimberly Banschbach, caught the unidentified traffic cop as she walked her dog. She went home and returned with her mother, and the policeman was still fast asleep. “It made me really furious,” she said. “I work as a flight attendant and work 16 hours a day and I don’t fall asleep.”

Allegedly, the cop was asleep for at least 15 minutes, with the speed gun he was supposed to be in charge of laying on his dashboard. We imagine any readings that day would likely have to be put down to his own rapid eye movement. Queensland Police Service were supplied with the photos yesterday, and have confirmed that they are investigating the circumstances.

Of course, them boys in blue are most often found working hard on the beat, but it seems slightly criminal to allow this guy to get away with falling asleep under such circumstances. We're hoping, at the very least, that several charges of negligent napping will be leveled against him in the near future.
