Police have asked for public assistance after a violent assault in North Melbourne on Grand Final Day. A press release from Victoria Police reports that a 40-year-old man was walking home at approximately 11.45pm along Queensberry Street, when he was struck several times in the stomach and face by an unknown male assailant.

The attacker then allegedly choked out the man, who was unable to fight back due to having recently undergone neck surgery. Having spoken to several people in the area, police suggest that the offender may have had martial arts knowledge or fighting experience.

They released the above image, taken by someone who helped the victim after the attack, in order to attempt to identify the man in the blue shirt. Police believe this man may be able to assist with their enquiries. The women in the picture may have some connection with the man police are looking for.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
