Frank Miller is the guy who almost singled-handedly revolutionised Batman in the 80s. Of course, there were sick Batman comics before him, but with the one-two punch of The Dark Knight Returns and Year One, he defined the dark, brooding, violent Batman that has made him the most popular superhero in the world.

1986’s The Dark Knight Returns told the story of an older Batman coming out of retirement to clean up a Gotham that had gone to hell, and is generally regarded as one of the greatest comics of all time. He followed it up in 2001 with The Dark Knight Strikes Again, which got mixed reviews but still has some great stuff in there. Now he’s going to conclude the trilogy with The Dark Knight III: The Master Race, co-written with 100 Bullets writer Brian Azzarello.

And now the cover for the first issue has dropped.

It’s by artist Dave Johnson, and it’s a retailer-specific cover (meaning that your local comic book shop with have their name where it says “your logo here”).

This art by frequent-Miller collaborator Klaus Janson was previously released.
