'Selma' Star David Oyelowo Cast as First Black James Bond—but Only in an Audiobook

We won't actually see him play Bond, but it still counts.

There’s been rumours bubbling for a while that Idris Elba might be cast as James Bond when Daniel Craig steps down, and become the first non-white actor to play the character. But now Selma star David Oyelowo has beaten him to it.

Only there’s a catch. Oyelowo will only play Bond in an audiobook. Which means we won’t actually see him play 007. He’s been cast in the audiobook of Trigger Mortis, which is the new ‘official’ James Bond novel (written by Anthony Horowitz, because Bond creator Ian Fleming has been dead for 50 years). Oyelowo told The Guardian he was “very honoured,” and that he “was asked specifically by the Fleming estate, which is really special.”

“I am officially the only person on planet Earth who can legitimately say: ‘I am the new James Bond’ – even saying that name is the cinematic equivalent of doing the ‘to be or not to be’ speech.”
