Generally teenagers are lucky if they can get enough people together to afford a limo to take them to their high school prom. Some just drive themselves and their friends to the festivities in their parents’ minivan, or if they’re lucky, they have their own car. But Amherst Regional High School in Nova Scotia is all about making a grand entrance.

Students have participated in the tradition of trying to one-up each other with their prom entrances for years, but this year one student really went all out. Sure, the SUV stretch limousines are nice. Kind of predictable, but classy anyway. Classic cars are another way to go, but senior, Mackenzie Cole had something bigger in mind.

Cole worked 30-40 hours a week as a lifeguard, and also pitched in with the chemical work, at the local swimming pool to save up the over $2000 he needed to book a helicopter to take him and his date to the prom.

He told BuzzFeed Canada that he kept his plan a secret from his parents until the day before prom. “They told me that it’s my money, so I’m free to spend it as I will.” His unique ride to prom also included a 50 minute tour of the province from the air. Prom only happens once, so he wanted to make it an experience to remember. Also, bragging rights.

Not only did he book the helicopter ride, but he made sure there was a safe place to land in a field near the school. He also confirmed that the helicopter’s blades had come to a complete stop before he and his date exited the copper, so as not to mess up her hair.

Cole told CBC, “I’ve seen some people take ATVs and hay wagons, but I think this takes the cake for the most unique.” He’s cemented his legend status in Amherst Regional High’s record books, that’s for sure. Seniors will be talking about his entrance for years to come, wondering how do we top that?
