Jeopardy contestants usually make it on the show because they have encyclopedia-like knowledge of the world. But throw a couple Canadian geography questions in there, and it’s blank stares all around.

Jeopardy contestant, Randy Pike was sitting in third place at $5,600 when he chose a Daily Double  and decided to wager $5,400 and make a play for the lead. Unfortunately for him, the category was Canadian cities, which he seems to know very little about. The clue, “The swan is a symbol of this Ontario city; each year, white & black swans are released into the Avon River,” was read by Alex Trebek (who was born and raised in Ontario), and Randy answers, “What is Edmonton”.

Even Trebek seems to feel bad for Randy, whose score dropped down to $200 just like that. “You had to think, Avon river. Shakespeare…” Trebek says of the answer, which is Stratford.

The two other contestants aren’t exactly fighting to answer the rest of the questions in the category either. Randy tries to redeem himself with clues about Banff, and what should have been the easiest question of them all— “Residents of this Saskatchewan city are called Moose Javians,” to which Randy answers, Winnipeg. It’s Moose Jaw, Randy. Think about it. other two questions in the category didn’t even get an attempt from any of the contestants, and at the end of the round Randy was in the hole $2,600. Just goes to show you that you never know when you might need to know your Canadian trivia, even if you’re American.
