Selma director Ava DuVernay may have been snubbed by the Oscars, but it appears that she'll join the world of superhero films dominated by white males. Marvel is reportedly courting DuVernay to direct either Black Panther or Captain Marvel, according to The Wrap. Sources indicate Marvel is keen on hiring an African-American director for Black Panther and a female for Captain Marvel.
If she is indeed hired she'd be Marvel's first black director, as well as the first woman. Patty Jenkins was hired to direct Thor: The Dark World but eventually replaced by Alan Taylor. However, she did go on to get the gig for DC Comics' Wonder Woman.
For DuVernay landing one of the Marvel films would mark a significant change of pace. She's stuck with indie films since making her fictional debut in 2010 with I Will Follow. And while it'd be surprising to see her helm a blockbuster superhero flick, Marvel could undoubtedly use her voice.
