The FBI's investigation into Amtrak Train 188's crash has found that it was not shot at prior to crashing last week. The crash killed eight people, and injured over 200.
According to the New York Times, federal investigators found no evidence suggesting that damage to Train 188's windshield was not caused by a bullet:
You know when a pebble hits a windshield and it goes through a layer and the window fractures and itkind of looks like a spider web? That’s sort of what it looks like,” said a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation, who did not want to be identified during a continuing investigation.It’s a small hole, but the glass around it is broken.
However, the NTSB is looking into the possibility that another object hit the train's windshield:
Officials analyzed the windshield to determine if damage to the glass was caused by the derailment or a projectile, such as a rock.
The N.T.S.B. said it expected final results in the next few days.
It could be completely coincidental, it could be causal, and that’s exactly what we are trying to find out, Robert L. Sumwalt, a member of the N.T.S.B., said Sunday on the CBS program Face the Nation.
Amtrak restored service between D.C. and New York yesterday, a day earlier than expected. Meanwhile, the Times adds that the district attorney's office in Philadelphia is compiling evidence, but has yet to actually open an investigation.
