'Orange Is the New Black' Isn't a Comedy, According to the Emmys

It has to compete in the stacked drama category.

Just because Orange Is the New Black makes you laugh doesn't mean it's a comedy. That's what the TV Academy has decided, ruling that the show can compete at the Emmys as a drama but not as a comedy. Netflix had been lobbying for OITNB to compete in the comedy category, which isn't nearly as stacked as drama.

"Orange is the New Black is a truly pioneering series and an iconoclast which has always defied genre or easy categorization," Netflix CCO Ted Sarandos told THR. "While we’re disappointed in the committee’s decision, we believe that Orange represents the best of television in either category."

Just yesterday the TV Academy decided to allow hour-long shows Shameless, Jane the Virgin and Glee to compete in the comedy category. Why the nine panel members didn't decide to give OITNB the same treatment is unclear. Perhaps it's time to start a Dramedy category.
