Bartkira is a collaborative project between over 500 different cartoonists, mashing up The Simpsons with the influential manga and anime Akira. The anime adaptation of Akira was one of the first Japanese animations to break through to the West in the 80s, and remains iconic to this day. The project recasts Bart and Milhouse as the two leads Kaneda and Tetsuo.
They’ve previously had exhibitions in the US and the UK, and this weekend they’ll be opening at the Gallery Hakusen in Tokyo. At the moment it’s mostly a free-form project at the moment, but it looks like they might actually try to adapt all 3000 pages of the original manga.
They’re also working on an Simpsons version of the Akira trailer.
