Authorities in Louisiana say the man who police shot after he menaced TSA officers with wasp spray and a machete at an airport last night was carrying explosives at the time of the incident.

Richard White, 63, caused minor chaos at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport after sending a mist of wasp spray at a TSA officer at a security checkpoint. He then began waving a large machete at them before being shot. Two bystanders—another TSA agent and a passenger—sustained minor injuries after being struck by stray bullets. 

According to the Associated Press, Jefferson Parish authorities say the man was carrying a bag filled with explosives: 


Sheriff Newell Normand says suspect Richard White, who was shot by a security agent at the airport late Friday, was carrying a bag loaded with six Molotov cocktails. Material determined to have come from smoke bombs was also found.

White, who authorities implied suffers from mental health issues, underwent surgery last night and remains hospitalized.
