The New York Daily News reports that 41-year-old Angelo West shot Officer John Moynihan, 34, just below his right eye in an unprovoked attack in the city's Roxbury section:

Witness video, which has not been released, shows the highly decorated cop barely exchanging words with the driver before he was blasted in the face about 6:40 p.m., Evans said. None of the six officers involved had their guns drawn.

The Daily News adds that Moynihan was rushed to Boston Medical Center, and the bullet remains stuckbehind his right ear.

According to the Daily News, West, described as a "career criminal" was killed by officers who returned fire.

Marty Walsh, the city's mayor, delivered a statement condemning senseless acts of violence like this:

My thoughts and prayers are with the Officer injured tonight, his family and friends and the entire Boston Police Department during this difficult time. These acts of violence have no place in our neighborhoods. Our community is stronger than ever, and tonight we are thankful for all of those who put their lives on the on the line everyday to protect our City.

Lastly, the Daily News notes that two other passengers who were in the vehicle with West are being qquestioned by police.
