The N.W.A. biopic (produced by Ice Cube and Dr. Dre) has gone through fits and starts of being made for years; now it's being released during a time when cops might arrest you for playing "Fuck That Police." So the biggest question about Straight Outta Compton is if the biopic of of the rap group is gonna be sanitized at all—what with Cube making daddy Disney movies, and Dre selling expensive headphones. During the Grammy's, the official movie tie-in website debuted the trailer for the film, and it looks harsh. Full of spit and swagger, it ain't soft. The venom appears to be maintained.

Watch the trailer now (The Grammy's are tone-deaf anyway). It's a lot bigger than the one that Ice Cube debuted on stage in Australia. Emphasis on world-changing.

Straight Outta Compton stars Ice Cube's son O'Shea Jackson, Jr. as Ice Cube, Jason Mitchell as Eazy E, Aldis Hodge as MC Ren, Neil Brown, Jr. as DJ Yella, and Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre. Lakeith Lee Stanfield (formerly known as Keith Stanfield, from Short Term 12) co-stars as Snoop Dogg, R. Marcus Taylor plays Suge Knight, and Paul Giamatti is Jerry Heller, N.W.A.'s manager.

F. Gary Gray's (Friday, The Negotiator) film hits theaters August 14. Does it have enough attitude?

UPDATE: According to The Wrap, the introduction to the trailer (Ice Cube and Dr. Dre driving around Compton, talking about their difficult beginnings) was actually filmed the day that Suge Knight was involved in a fatal hit-and-run, nearby in the area.
