Will Smith is out and Liam Hemsworth is probably in for the "Independence Day" sequel.

Is there even a point to have an Independence Day sequel if Will Smith isn’t reprising his role as Capt. Steven Hiller? You may appreciate Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, but we all know that Smith is the one that made this cinematic masterpiece go.

It appears that, despite the folly of such an enterprise, the producers are proceeding without Smith as the lead. Instead, they have reportedly offered the top role in ID Forever to Liam Hemsworth, who has action experience in The Hunger Games and Expendables franchises.

Roland Emmerich will return to direct this sad version that, no matter how awesome it is, will not quite be the same without the brash fighter pilot who helped mankind raise a middle finger to our alien invaders and hand-delivered the most crippling computer virus of all-time.

We’ll miss you, Capt. Hiller. Welcome to Earth, indeed.
