Despite the protestations of the key witness and lead prosecutor in the trial against Adnan Syed, the subject of the wildly popular Serial podcast will have his appeal heard by the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.

Convicted of first degree murder in 2000 for the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, Syed was sentenced to life in prison and has been going through various appeals processes over the last 15 years. In what may be his last chance, Syed has appealed the Baltimore City Circuit Court’s “denial of his petition for post-conviction relief,” and the State of Maryland must respond to the application tomorrow.

According to a media release, “Maryland’s appellate courts…review a trial court's actions and decisions and decide whether the trial judge properly followed the law and legal precedent,” and no oral arguments will be heard. Should the application be granted, Syed and his attorneys will have a chance to argue their case.

But what about the Nisha call?
