A corrections officer shot his 12-year-old daughter by accident in Alaska, authorities say.

According to the Associated Press, the incident happened while the man was at physical therapy session for the girl in Fairbanks, Alaska on Monday. As the father, a corrections officer at Fairbanks Correctional Center, took his pistol from his hip holster, it accidentally discharged, traveling through his forearm before grazing his daughter's left thigh and hitting her right thigh.

The Fairbanks Daily News adds that the girl underwent surgery and was released from the hospital on Tuesday morning.

No charges have been filed, but police have forwarded the results of their investigation to prosecutors to make that determination.
