So strange. So Florida.

A conscientious Florida man contacted the local sheriff's office to supervise the spanking of his daughter last week.

According to WLWT, the Okeechobee, Fla. man said his 12-year-old daughter engaged in an intense verbal dispute with her sister last Monday. Wishing to discipline the girl in a resounding way, he reached out to the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office to have a deputy oversee the spanking. The sheriff's office dispatched a deputy, who determined that the spanking was well within the parameters of the law.

Okeechobee County Undersheriff Noel Stephen, personal supervisor to roughly a dozen spankings, explained the logic to WLWT:

It's within statute for them to discipline their children, and spank them. ... You are entitled to paddle your child, whether you use you hands, you use a belt, you use a paddle. Within reason. As long as you're paddlin' the buttocks

Stephen did note that deputies will only be on hand to sanction spankings if they have "no other calls to handle." The only question is whether this will have the desired lasting effect on the man's pre-teen daughter, or an adverse one.
