Authorities Believe Boko Haram Kidnapped Roughly 80 People in Cameroon Over the Weekend

Authorities say many of the kidnapping victims were children.

Authorities in Cameroon believe Boko Haram is responsible for kidnapping dozens of people over the weekend.

According to Reuters, roughly 80 people were taken in attack targeting Mabass and other neighboring villages along Cameroon's border with Nigeria. What's more, most of those taken were reportedly children:

According to our initial information, around 30 adults, most of them herders, and 50 young girls and boys aged between 10 and 15 years were abducted, a senior army officer deployed to northern Cameroon told Reuters.

Although Issa Tchiroma Bakary, Cameroon's Information Minister, confirmed the attacks to Reuters, he wouldn't say exactly how may people were kidnapped:

There was a Boko Haram attack on several localities in the Far North region. The assailants burnt down about 80 homes and kidnapped several inhabitants including women and very young children, he said.

Reuters reports that thousands of additional troops have been sent to the area to deal with the threat. According to BBC News, at least 20 of the kidnapping victims have been freed.
