"Unbroken" Won Christmas at the Box Office

How far back was "The Interview?"

The Interview may have been the most talked about movie at your Christmas dinner, but the big winner at the box office was Unbroken. Angelina Jolie's third directorial effort grossed $15.6 million yesterday, giving it the third-highest debut on Christmas day. Not far behind was Into the Woods, which grossed $15.1 million.

Released on streaming services and in independent theaters, The Interview grossed $1 million to put it at 15th place—all the proof you need that its controversial on-and-off-again rollout wasn't a publicity stunt. You better believe it wouldn't have placed in double digits had it been released in major theaters as planned.

Both Unbroken and Into the Woods are expected to surpass $40, but it's possible The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will come back to win the weekend. The final movie in the saga grossed $13.1 million Thursday, bringing its total to $127.1 million a little more than a week after releasing.
