Above the law? Not quite.

Even though four pounds of marijuana was found in his home, a California police officer has managed to duck charges.

According to RT USA, veteran Richmond Police Department officer Joe Avila retrieved a box containing marijuana from UPS in November 2013. But he never filed an incident report, nor did he place it in an evidence locker. When the discrepancies were unearthed, Avila told authorities that he used about half of the marijuana to teach his police dog how to detect it.

Upon further prodding, he noted that some weed might be in the trunk of his police cruiser—and in his Oakley, Calif. home. A search of confirmed the latter, and Avila has been on administrative leave since September.

Although he reportedly failed to file about three-dozen reports, Avila will not face charges from the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office. However, since he was already under investigation by the District Attorney for seperate reasons, there's a pretty strong chance that his time with the police department is up.
