As you get older, you’ll find inevitably find yourself having the “what’s the point of New Year’s Eve?” conversation more and more. John Oliver feels your pain, and even though Last Week Tonight is on hiatus until February, he checked in via YouTube to give you some tips on how to just avoid this holiday that he feels is “the worst.”

You’ll need to be committed to lying, which Oliver doesn’t seem to have much of an issue with. And, unless your friends are either Boondock Saints scholars or huge proponents of a cleanse, using his excuses to avoid going out on December 31 should work like a charm.

If the whole Last Week Tonight thing doesn’t end up working out, Oliver would clearly kill it as a life coach for those people who want to avoid most things in their lives.
