Chris Rock, who has mined his marriage for probably hours of material over the past 20 years, has filed for divorce, his attorney confirmed Sunday.
"Chris Rock has filed for divorce from his wife, Malaak," Robert S. Cohen said in a statement. "This is a personal matter and Chris requests privacy as he and Malaak work through this process and focus on their family.”
Rock's wife, Malaak Compton-Rock, released a longer, more personal statement about the split.
"After much contemplation and 19 years of marriage, Chris and I have decided to go our separate ways.Being fortunate enough to lead a life of service by working with those most vulnerable makes me well aware of life's blessings, even when faced with difficulties.
While recognizing that this is a significant change, my children remain at the center of my life and their well-being is my top priority. It is in this spirit that I sincerely ask that their privacy and the privacy of our family be respected during this transition in our lives."
Rock, 49, and Compton-Rock, 45, have been married since 1996 and have two daughters aged 12 and 10.
It's sad news considering Rock is coming off the best reviews of his career for Top Five, but as Rock's fellow comedian Louis C.K. said in his own stand-up act, "divorce is always good news. I know that sounds weird, but it's true, because no good marriage has ever ended in divorce.."
