Ready Player One, the successful 2011 sci-fi novel by Ernest Cline, is a hot property at Warner Bros. right now, and their director shortlist for the adaptation is impressive. The studio is courting Christopher Nolan for the project, while other names on the list include Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings), Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future), Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz), and Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class).

The story concerns a dystopian future where society escapes from the daily drudge through a multiplayer simulation called OASIS. When youngster Wade Watts discovers the first of three clues to unlocking the vast fortune of the creator of OASIS hidden in the game, all hell breaks loose.

All of these directors are solid choices, particularly Zemeckis, to whom the book owes a certain debt given its wealth of 80s pop culture allusions, but it would be interesting to see any of these A-listers' takes on Cline's much-sought source material.
