Budget airline carrier AirAsia has confirmed that its flight QZ 8501 which originated in the city of Surabaya, Indonesia and is traveling to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control. There are 155 passengers and crew on board; 149 are Indonesians, three passengers are from Korea and the remaining three are from Singapore, Britain, and Malaysia. 

A search and rescue operation has been launched. AirAsia is based in Malaysia and is coordinating search attempts. More as the story develops.
